Frequently asked questions

  • The best way to start is to visit your local club, the majority of members will freely provide advice
  • Attend local or national modelling exhibitions
  • Search the internet (particularly YouTube) for model types that interest you, or read specialist magazines

  • Often, modellers choose types that were of specific interest to them as a child
  • Information is available to assist you in deciding on your way forward
  • Limits on the physical size of any finished model sometimes helps to determine what to build/buy/operate

  • This depends on the size of your model and whether you intend to manufacture the parts yourself, or buy them
  • A basic workshop area within say a garage is recommended, but not essential
  • Basic DIY tools may be all you need, such as files, drills, spanners, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Machinery such as lathes, milling machines are not essential and can be expensive, many clubs have these available for use by members. Some clubs offer training in their use
  • Specialist tools can be purchased as needed rather than all at once

  • Model engineering requires a range of skills many of which can be learned on the Job
  • Many clubs run courses in modelling skills and running models
  • Many clubs have very experienced members only too willing to help

  • Membership of the CSMEE is open to Model Engineers of all ages
  • The Club has tracks for running locomotives and grounds for other vehicles eg traction engines
  • The Club has a large club house including engineering facilities
  • Club membership costs £74 per year, running days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

  • It can be as much as you can afford
  • Buying a model can be expensive and open to risks for the novice
  • Building a model can be spread over many years so spreading the cost
